June marks the arrival of strawberries in Ohio and they are as sweet as can be! When fruit tastes this good, it doesn't need much embellishment. A little whipped cream flavored with Grand Marnier and honey on the side, and you've got an elegant dessert that can be assembled in minutes. Make the cream a few hours before serving as the flavors need time to meld together. Then kick back and enjoy the sweet taste of summer.
Strawberries with Grand Marnier Cream
- 1 quart fresh strawberries
3 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature- (See Note)
- 3 T. Grand Marnier
- 3 T. honey
- 1 cup heavy cream
Wash the strawberries in cold water, remove their stems, and drain well on paper towels. If using large berries, cut them in half or quarters.
Beat the cream cheese in the small bowl of an electric mixer until smooth. Add the Grand Marnier and honey. Beat well and set aside.
In a medium bowl of an electric mixer, whip the cream until it holds a soft shape.
Fold the cream cheese mixture into the whipped cream.
To serve, alternate berries and cream in individual glass containers, beginning with a layer of strawberries, or serve as pictured on dessert plates with the cream on the side. Either way, it's important to REFRIGERATE FOR AT LEAST 3 HOURS BEFORE SERVING to allow the flavor of the cream to develop.
Adding cream cheese to whipped cream gives it extra body so it can hold up nicely for several hours. It also adds flavor and makes piping, if desired, much easier.
