Baby, it's cold outside.
When the snow begins to fall and the temperatures take a dive, nothing warms me up like a piping hot drink. One of my favorites is a steamy mug of apple cider spiced with oranges, lemons, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and star anise. Sometimes I'll add a little splash of Calvados or Bourbon, which only makes a good thing better.
Hot Spiced Apple Cider
- 4 cups apple cider
- 8 strips of orange rind from 1 orange
- 8 whole cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 t. whole allspice
- 4 lemon slices
- 4 star anise
- 1/4 cup Calvados or Bourbon (optional)
Remove the orange rind using a vegetable peeler and place in a stockpot with the cider, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then turn off heat and allow the spices to steep in the cider for 15 minutes. Add Calvados or Bourbon, if using. Ladle into mugs and serve with a slice of lemon and star anise.
